A Poem

via Clay Banks on Unsplash

I wish I had a mind
that could hold my triumphs for longer
than mere moments
That could slow down
To collect the sweetness
From my greatness
Perhaps then I would believe in it

I wish I had a heart
Light as the one I carried in childhood
When I thought destiny ran on the wind
When I looked into the black of night
And imagined myself seer of the world

I wish my desires
Would shake themselves out
Iron themselves smooth
So I could run my hands over them
And finally know my own heart

I wish my words
could transcend themselves
Could float beyond me
And in the patterns of their flight
I would know my own purpose

I wish I could gather
The scattered skills and trades I’ve learned
And forge them into a plan
I wish I had a map to change the world
And in possessing it
Would know my own history
